In Actionstep, matter types provide a template framework for organizing your matters. Each matter type has different stages in the process (or workflow) that help you manage the matter from the contact phase through to completion. Each matter type also supports different data collection fields and automated tasks unique to that specific type. Additionally, some matter types include default document templates (referred to as "precedents" in Australasia).

Default Matter Types

Every Actionstep system includes several default matter types that you can use to create various matters. These include:

  • Bankruptcy
  • Child Support
  • Child Support Agreement
  • Conveyancing Purchase
  • Conveyancing Sale
  • CRM
  • Divorce
  • Domestic Violence

  • Estate Planning
  • Family Court Forms
  • Federal Circuit Court Forms
  • Financial Agreement
  • General
  • Independent Children's Lawyer (ICL)
  • Litigation

  • Mediation/Family Dispute Resolution
  • Miscellaneous
  • Parenting
  • Precedent Documents
  • Property & Parenting
  • Property Settlement
  • Surrogacy

Marketplace Matter Types

Depending on your Actionstep plan, you can install additional matter types (both free and paid) from the Actionstep Marketplace. Typically, paid matter types include a wide range of document templates that it make it more efficient when creating matters in Actionstep.

Custom Matter Types

You can also create custom matter types that are completely customized for your own business processes.  You can do this one of two ways:

  • While creating a matter, click Add New Matter Type (located at the bottom of the window) and complete the information that is requested.
  • An admin can go to Admin > Matter Types and click Create new matter type. Then complete the information that's requested.

Once you've created a matter type, you can modify its settings. See Creating and Editing a Matter Type (Admin) for help.
