In this article, you will learn how to open a trust account within a matter. This is not to be confused with setting up the trust account itself, which you will have to do first before reviewing this article. Please see Configuring/Editing Trust Bank Accounts for more information.

Manually within a matter

To open a trust account for a specified matter, you will need to access the matter first and then go to the matters trust accounting menu and click on it to go to the overview screen you can then select to add an account from there to open a trust account.

You'll be able to choose the type of trust account to open, the date at which the trust account was opened for the specified matter (it would usually match the date of first entry), as well as add any notes about the account.

Automatically on matter creation or a step change

It might also save time to open a trust account automatically when a matter is created or on a specified step change.

To do this you have to automate your steps within your workflow to open a trust account and this can be required (i.e. automatic) or optional.

For more information on how to set this up - see here: Edit Workflow Step Screen - Trust Accounting Data

TIP: This saves the user time as they able to open a trust account when opening a matter (if added to the start step) or on a specified step without having to access the trust accounting tab on a matter manually.
