About Actionstep Legal Accounting

Information in this article may still be under development.

Using the Actionstep Legal Accounting integration, you can manage both the front-end details of your law practice as well as your firm’s accounting and billing. Front-end workflows, like matter and task management, client management, calendars, and so forth are managed in Actionstep Practice Management, while billing and accounting workflows are managed in Legal Accounting. Where the two products intersect (namely, clients/contacts, matters/files, and timekeeping) you can use the Legal Accounting integration to facilitate that connection.

This integration allows you to create or edit contacts and matters in Practice Management and have those changes synchronized with Legal Accounting. You can also create contacts in Legal Accounting and they will be synchronized with Practice Management.

Both contacts and matters are linked between the systems by their IDs :

  • When you create a new contact in Practice Management, the contact details along with the Practice Management contact ID are sent to Legal Accounting where a contact is created and saved. Similarly, when you create a contact in Legal Accounting, the contact is created in Practice Management.
NOTE:  During this process, if you enter a contact number (using the Reference field), Legal Accounting will validate that the number you've assigned has not been used before it creates the contact; otherwise, you will see an error in the Link Indicator status.
  • When you create a new matter in Practice Management, the matter details along with the Matter ID are sent to and created in Legal Accounting. Legal Accounting also creates a matter number and saves it to the File Reference field for the matter in Practice Management. If you've entered a matter number (using the File Reference field) when you creating the matter, Legal Accounting will validate that the number you've assigned has not been used before it creates the matter; otherwise, you will see an error on the Link Indicator for the matter. (If your firm is using the Matter Reference field for something other than a matter number, you will need to work with your integration partner to repurpose this field before you can use the integration.)

In short, you can create contacts and matters in one system while synchronizing this information with the other. It also allows you to easily send time tracked using Practice Management to Legal Accounting for Billing. Similarly, you can access matter balances from Legal Accounting from within Practice Management.

CAUTION:  Please note that your Legal Accounting integration can only connect a single Practice Management system with a single Legal Accounting system.
