A matter type in Actionstep is a pre-templated framework for your matter to sit within. Each matter type has different stages in the process (workflow) of carrying a matter from Initial Contact through to completion. Each matter type also includes different data collection fields, automated tasks, and some matter types even come with default document templates (referred to as "precedents" in Australasia).
