Trust / Client Account Trial Balance Report

NOTE:  In the UK, trust accounts are called client accounts. Throughout this article, any reference to a trust account also means a client account.


In this article:




Brief Description

This report shows trust / client account balances by action reconciled against the general ledger. It allows you to reconcile your matter trust / client account balances for the relevant period with your trust / client account bank reconciliation. It shows the matter balances for a period ending.  

TIP:  This report should be included as part of month-end reporting for Australian users.

This report is useful for seeing a summary of your current matter balances and whether all balances have been reconciled. (To learn more, see




Finding the Report

In Actionstep, go to Reports > Trust / Client Acct Reports > Reports List > General.




Available Filters

  • Period Ending: Enter the end date for the period. 
  • Trust / Client account: Choose one or more trust / client accounts you want included in the report. If you leave this option blank, all trust / client accounts will be included. 
  • Reconciled cashbook value (depending on jurisdiction): Enter the cashbook balance you are reconciling to, not your bank statement balance.  
  • Sort by: Choose how you want to sort the data in the report, by Matter ID, Matter Name, Last Entry Date, Client, or Balance.




Report Output

Depending on the Sort by filter you selected, the report provides an itemized list of balances. The table includes the following columns: 

  • Matter ID: Shows the matter's ID. You can click this link to view the associated matter. 
  • Client: Shows the client's name.  
  • Matter Description: Shows the description associated with the matter. 
  • Last Entry: Shows the date of the last entry made on the account's ledger. 
  • Balance: Shows the current balance in the trust / client account. 




Additional Notes

This should reconcile to the trust / client account cash book for the same period and/or bank reconciliation for the same period.
