When a matter is restricted in Practice Management, changes to the matter's Description, Assigned To, or File Reference fields will not be synchronized with Legal Accounting.
If you have access to a restricted matter, you will see two alerts letting you know this matter is both restricted and synced to Legal Accounting. The yellow status indicator, in particular, warns you that changes you make to the matter will not be synced to Legal Accounting.
This article can help you understand which matter changes can be synchronized between Practice Management and Legal Accounting, depending on where the matter is restricted. It also offers work arounds for making needed updates.
Restricted Matters in Practice Management
The following applies whenever a matter is restricted in Practice Management, irrespective of its status in Legal Accounting.
-
Remove the restriction before changing core matter details: You must remove the restriction from the matter in Practice Management before changing any of the following; otherwise, the changes will not be synchronized:
- Matter Description
- Assigned To
- File Reference (Matter #)
- Adding clients to, or removing clients from, the matter
-
Changes you can make in Legal Accounting: The following can be changed in Legal Accounting and will be reflected on the Matter Billing page in Practice Management:
- Area of Law
- Rate Group, File Group and Tax Group
-
Responsible, Assigned*, Lead and Introducing
Note: Changing the Assigned lawyer in Legal Accounting updates the assigned lawyer displayed on the Matter Billing page in Practice Management, but not the Assigned To field on the Edit Matter page. If you want to change the assigned lawyer, it is recommended that you un-restrict the matter in Practice Management first.
- Electronic Billing
- Tags
- Contact to CC and Contact for Billing Address
- Time entries on the Timesheet: Time entries for restricted matters display the matter name as "Restricted Matter", and the File Reference (Matter #) is hidden from the time entry list view. If you have security permissions for the matter and the time entry, you can drill down into the entry to see the hidden details. If you are restricted from the matter in Legal Accounting, you will not be able to view its time entries on the Timesheet.
Restricted Matters in Legal Accounting Only
In Legal Accounting, changes to a restricted matter synchronize as expected. Specifically, users with permission to change restricted matters can make changes in either Practice Management or Legal Accounting, and the changes will be synchronized as expected.
