There may be times when you need to prepare two or more invoices at the same time for the same matter. This commonly occurs when you want to bill separately for different stages of work or distinct services within the same engagement.
For example, let's say you're assisting a client with placing a covenant on a land title prior to selling a property. You may handle both activities under a single matter but prefer to bill each stage separately. Or, let's say a litigation matter involves discovery work and pre-trial preparation, where the firm agrees to bill these stages independently. In these cases, even though work on both stages may occur during the same period, you may want to allocate time entries to different draft invoices depending on which part of the engagement the work relates to.
You can create up to 10 draft invoices for a matter.
To create multiple invoices for a matter:
- Open a matter with unbilled fees and/or disbursements/expenses.
- Click the Billing menu icon. The Billing > Overview page appears, showing any uninvoiced fees or disbursements/expenses along the top of the page.
- On the left side of the page, click the Invoice / Bill $ now button. The Create Bill window appears.
- If needed, make any changes you need to the bill.
- Click Save as draft. The invoice is saved as a draft and the label on the button is changed to Bill is in Draft.
- Once you have a draft bill and you add a fee or disbursement/expense, the Invoice Now button on the Billing page changes to Invoice bill.
- Click Invoice bill and choose from the following options:
- DRAFT: Choose this option to add the new charges to the existing draft invoice.
- Create new bill: Choose this option to create a separate, new invoice for the newly added charges. Then, complete the information needed to generate the invoice.
Going forward, the Invoice bill button will display options for viewing and editing as many draft invoices you’ve created (up to 10).
