Using Dark Mode in Actionstep Practice Management

Actionstep Practice Management does not currently have built-in dark mode functionality. However, many users prefer working in dark mode — whether for comfort, accessibility, or personal preference. (Dark mode is a display setting for web-based applications that uses lighter-colored text and icons on a dark background.)

Dark mode for web applications like Practice Management is typically handled at the browser level rather than within the application itself. Below are some options that other users have explored. These are community-known approaches that are common across many web-based software products.

Disclaimer: The options described in this article are third-party browser features that are not developed, tested, or supported by Actionstep Practice Management. We cannot guarantee that any of these options will work correctly with Practice Management, and we accept no liability for any issues, errors, display problems, or data display inconsistencies that may arise from their use. If you experience problems while using any of these features, please disable them before contacting Actionstep Support, as we are unable to investigate or resolve issues related to browser-level dark mode tools.

If you'd like to formally request dark mode as a product feature in Practice Management, please submit your suggestion using the Actionstep Roadmap. See Viewing the Actionstep Roadmap to learn how.

Option 1: Force Dark Mode Using Google Chrome

Google Chrome includes an experimental setting that forces dark mode on all websites, including web applications like Actionstep.

If you choose to use this option, please be aware of the following:

  • This is an experimental feature and is not officially supported by Google for use with all websites.
  • This setting will affect all websites you visit and use—not just Practice Management.
  • It can cause display issues such as inverted colors, unreadable text, low-contrast elements, or broken icons in Practice Management.
  • It may not be applied consistently across all areas of Practice Management.
  • Actionstep does not support or test against this feature, and display issues caused by it cannot be fixed.

To use this setting:

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. In the address bar, type chrome://flags and press Enter.
  3. In the search box at the top, search for Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
  4. Click the Default drop-down list next to the result and select Enabled.
  5. Click Relaunch at the bottom of the page to restart Chrome.

Once relaunched, Chrome will attempt to apply a dark theme to all websites you visit, including Practice Management.

Option 2: Use Vivaldi Browser's Built-in Dark Mode / Theme

Vivaldi is a Chrome-based browser (built on the same foundation as Google Chrome) that has built-in theming and dark mode support, including the ability to force a dark theme on all websites.

If you choose to use this browser, please be aware of the following things:

  • Vivaldi is a separate browser and you will need to set it up with your bookmarks, passwords, and preferences if switching from another browser.
  • This setting will affect all websites you visit and use—not just Practice Management.
  • As with Chrome's flag, forcing a dark theme on web applications can cause visual inconsistencies.
  • Actionstep does not support or test against Vivaldi and will not investigate issues that occur specifically within or because of this browser.

To enable and use Vivaldi:

  1. Download and install Vivaldi from vivaldi.com.
  2. Open Vivaldi and go to Settings. (You can click the Vivaldi icon in the top-left, or press F12.)
  3. Navigate to Appearance.
  4. Under Website Appearance, select Dark.
  5. Select Force a dark theme on all websites.

Vivaldi will now apply a dark overlay to all websites, including Practice Management.

Option 3: Use Dark Reader Browser Extension

Dark Reader is a popular open-source browser extension available for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and other Chrome-based browsers. It applies a customizable dark mode to websites. It offers more control than the browser-level flags above, including brightness, contrast, and sepia adjustments.

As with all third-party tools, Actionstep does not endorse, test, or support this extension, and it cannot assist with issues arising from its use.

It is available from darkreader.org.
