Creating Participant Types (Admin)

Participant types are used to classify groups of people within your different matters and workflows. For example, in an estate planning matter type, you might have participant types like trustee, executor, beneficiary, etc. Contacts you add to your system can then be assigned one of these roles.

By default, Actionstep Practice Management includes a list of common participant types. However, if you have a participant type that isn't included in this list, you can add it so that it can be used in your different matter types as well as in any documents you associate with your matters or clients.

To create a new participant type:

  1. In Practice Management, go to Admin > Additional settings. The Additional Settings page appears.
  2. Click Edit next to the Participant types option. The Participant Types page appears.
  3. Click Add participant type. The Add Participant Type window appears.
  4. Add the following details:
    • Participant type name: Enter the name for the participant type. This will be added as a potential option to the Parties list for matter types. It will also be used for the merge field / document assembly. Examples include Court, Psychologist, IT_Consultant, Accountant, etc.

NOTE:  Names can only include alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9). If the name needs a space, use an underscore (_). Do not use any other special characters (including apostrophes or quotation marks).

    • Description: Enter explanatory information regarding the Participant Type if required.
    • Company flag value: Click the drop-down list to choose if the participant type should always be a company or an individual by selecting Force Company or Force Individual. If the participant type could be either an individual or a company, select Not specified (Company or Individual).
  5. Click Save to save your changes.
