About Matter Types

Matter types are the foundation of how work is organized in Actionstep Practice Management. They act like a reusable template that defines the workflow, data, participants, documents, and settings used for a specific type of matter. 

For example, a Residential Conveyancing matter type might automatically include milestones for contract review, inspections, settlement, and title transfer; store property details and settlement dates; assign roles for the buyer, seller, and real estate agent; and provide document templates (or precedents) such as engagement letters and settlement statements. By tailoring each matter type to a specific details like this, firms can ensure staff follow consistent processes and capture the right information every time. 

Similarly, a Civil Litigation matter type might include stages for pleadings, discovery, mediation, and trial. It might also help you track court deadlines and case details; assign participants such as the client, opposing counsel, and expert witnesses; and include standard court forms and correspondence templates.
